The primary responsibilities of a bricklayer include:
Laying bricks: Bricklayers arrange bricks and other masonry units in a specific pattern using mortar (a mixture of cement, sand, and water). This process forms the basis of various structures.
Measuring and cutting: They measure and cut bricks to fit specific dimensions, ensuring the proper alignment and appearance of the finished structure.
Building walls and structures: Bricklayers construct walls, arches, pillars, chimneys, fireplaces, and other masonry structures, both interior and exterior.
Applying mortar and other materials: Bricklayers apply mortar between the bricks to create a strong bond, and they might also work with other materials like concrete blocks, stone, or tiles.
Using various tools: They use tools such as trowels, levels, hammers, chisels, and jointers to accomplish their work efficiently and accurately.

Responsibilities
Tasks
- Prepare and lay bricks, concrete blocks, structural tiles or other masonry units
- Estimate materials, labour, tools and equipment
- Construct and install prefabricated masonry units
- Read sketches and blueprints to calculate materials required
- Cut and trim bricks and concrete blocks to specification using hand and power tools
- Line or reline furnaces, kilns, boilers and similar installations using refractory or acid-resistant bricks, refractory concretes, plastic refractories and other materials
- Restore, clean or paint existing masonry structures
